FOUR thousand households have responded to a constituency survey launched by Carmarthen West MP Simon Hart.

He sent forms to all 35,000 households in the constituency to discover peoples' views on important local topics.

These include the NHS, mobile phone and broadband coverage and attitudes towards windfarms.

The Conservative MP said the results had thrown up some unexpected findings.

He explained: "To my surprise 66 per cent of people felt that mobile phone coverage was either good or adequate in Carmarthenshire. Anecdotal evidence tends to point the other way.

"I think this is quite encouraging as it was something I used to have a lot of complaints about, but then perhaps this is down as much to improvement in handsets as to the signal quality."

Less surprising was 53 per cent of people believe that their broadband coverage was poor.

"I am continuing to lobby for faster roll-out of superfast broadband in Carmarthenshire as this is something that is stifling small businesses and the local economy," he added.

"Poor broadband tends to be one of those things we simply put up with, until we realise how much better it can really be."

Staff at Carmarthen's Glangwili Hospital received the thumbs-up with 73 per cent of people saying that the service they provided was "good" or "adequate".

Mr Hart added: "Finally, I was surprised by attitudes to wind farms being more evenly split than anticipated with 49 per cent of people opposing them being built in their county with 43 per cent in support.

"While this hasn't been a scientific exercise it's been very worthwhile and the number of responses I received show that people are keen to share their views.

"I'd like to say a big thank you to everyone who took the time to complete the survey, it's been a very useful exercise and helped me to keep in touch with the way people are feeling on key issues."

Mr Hart had offered a Kindle Fire in a prize draw for everyone who took part.

It was won by Ysgol Bro Myrddin pupil Sarra Evan- Reynolds after her family from Whitland took part.
