Swansea's Boulevard project on right path for finish by December

WORK on Swansea's "eastern gateway" Boulevard project is on schedule to be finished by December, it has been confirmed.

Drivers and pedestrians have faced a maze of bollards, diggers and disruption on Oystermouth Road since March, when work on the £8million improvement scheme began.

The plan is to create a more attractive entrance to Swansea city centre, with a tree-lined boulevard running from the Tawe river bridges to the LC leisure centre that also helps to link the centre with Marina.

Phase One of the project — the current work — runs from the bottom of The Strand to the bottom of Princess Way. No date has yet been set for the second half, which will run from The Strand to the Tawe.

At this week's cabinet meeting Nick Bradley, Swansea Council's cabinet member for Regeneration, told fellow members Phase One would be finished before the busy Christmas season.

He said: "The boulevard work is on schedule.

"The project is on-time and is due be finished before the start of the Waterfront Winterland."

The annual Winterland family attraction is due to open around November 15.

The finished scheme will see a wide central reservation and widened pavements to include cycle paths. Some 80 elm trees will be planted, and there will also be improved pedestrian crossings.

Mr Bradley has previously described Oystermouth Road and Quay Parade as a "barrier" between the city centre and the waterfront, and said: "It is important we encourage far more pedestrians and cyclists to pass between them. This activity, as well as a far more visually attractive city gateway, will help develop a sense of place and more investment in future."

The project is funded by the Welsh Government, the European Union and Swansea Council.

MICHU, Chico and Co have been given a glamorous new home in New York City. Promotional posters for each Premier League team have gone up across the Big Apple, encouraging New Yorkers to pick a team to support. The posters have given each Premier League team a location in the Big Apple – whether it be in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx or Staten Island, with the Swans sharing the Upper West Side with Liverpool, while champions Manchester United have been located in the Upper East Side. South Wales rivals Cardiff City are located in the borough of Brooklyn. The Upper West Side is a neighbourhood in Manhattan that lies between Central Park and the Hudson River, and between West 59th Street and West 110th Street. It has a reputation of being home to New York City's cultural and intellectual hub, with the world-famous Columbia University located at the north end of the neighbourhood. Some of the famous people to have homes there — and are potential new fans of Michael Laudrup's team — include Matt Damon, Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. The poster, which has gone up in bus stops and other spots across the metropolis, has been put together by US broadcaster NBC Sports, which is promising to show hundreds of Premier League games this season. Swansea Council says this promotion again shows the benefits of the club's Premier League status. Nick Bradley, the council's cabinet member for regeneration, said: "New York is one of the world's biggest, most vibrant and best-known cities. "Having Swansea featured in hugely populated areas like Manhattan and the other boroughs is the type of exposure you just can't buy because it means millions of people could potentially be introduced to the name of our city for the very first time. "Some people in New York will already know of Swansea because of the Dylan Thomas trail there, but this promotion shows we're a city of sport as well as a city of culture. "The concept of New Yorkers picking a team based on the map is also exciting because it could lead to Swansea becoming one of the most popular teams in the affluent Upper West Side. That could potentially generate more interest in our city as a place to visit at a time when we're already enjoying an unprecedented profile in other parts of the world like Scandinavia and South Korea. "Campaigns of this nature build on all we're continuing to do to make the most of Premier League status by promoting Swansea Bay in the UK's footballing heartlands." Some of the famous landmarks in the Upper West Side include Columbus Circle, the Lincoln Centre and the American Museum of Natural History where Night at the Museum, a famous comedy movie starring Ben Stiller, was set. Time Warner's headquarters are also located there. Other Premier League team locations include Chelsea in Battery Park and the financial district, Sunderland in the Bronx and Manchester City in the midtown area that includes Times Square.Who gets what Premier League teams have been allocated districts across the Big Apple....some more glamorous than others●Swansea City — Upper West Side●Liverpool — Upper West Side●Manchester United — Upper East Side●Chelsea — Battery Park and the financial district●Sunderland — the Bronx●Manchester City — midtown which includes Times Square.●Cardiff City — Brooklyn

100 applicants for one job - but no one showed up to start work

A BUSINESSWOMAN has criticised the JobCentre which directed 100 applicants to her, but no one wanted the job. Jean Rasbridge, who runs the thriving company The Smokers corr Angel (ecigarettes.co.uk), was looking for an £8-an-hour packer at her Crofty base and placed an advertisement with the Gorseinon JobCentre. She was quickly inundated with around 100 applications and Mrs Rasbridge had to ask for the ad to be removed. Seven of those were offered interviews, but three didn't show up — and when the successful candidate was offered the job, they didn't turn up to start work. "It was a total waste of time," Mrs Rasbridge said, adding that she believed it was just a "box-ticking exercise" on behalf of applicants who feared losing their benefits if they didn't go for vacant positions. And the applications came from people far and wide. Mrs Rasbridge said: "I had needed another packer because the business was growing very fast. "The ad went live at 2pm and at 3pm we took it off because the phone hadn't stopped ringing and we'd had email and written applications too. "They were from people all over the country, from as far away as Scotland and Peterborough, and some really highly-qualified people too including a college lecturer." Mrs Rasbridge said she soon feared people had just been applying in a bid to fill an applications quota set down by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) in order to keep their benefits. "I do not think the JobCentre staff are useless, it's the criteria they have to meet," she added. "I think the staff are doing their best, but who would relocate from Glasgow to Swansea for an £8-an hour packing job? "I believe there's a minimum number of jobs they have to apply for each week." A spokesman for the DWP, which is responsible for the JobCentre, said the number of jobs individuals had to apply for each week were agreed with an advisor and therefore varied from person to person. He added: "The DWP and Jobcentre Plus take cases such as these very seriously. "Jobseekers are required to do everything they can to find work if they want to claim jobseeker's allowance (JSA). If people fail to turn up for interviews or turn down a job offer for no good reason they will face losing their benefit. "It is because of this that we have introduced tough new penalties for those claimants who refuse to play by the rules." The latest figures show that between January and October 2012, the DWP enforced 680,180 sanctions on JSA claims. Sanctions are suspensions of benefits for a set length of time and are decided on an individual basis. Mrs Rasbridge's company, set up in 2008, has seven shops across South Wales, with a new one set to open in Llanelli next week. She employs 22 people, with three more set to join the workforce soon. Mrs Rasbridge added: "We make a point of looking for people who are unemployed. It is very hard for youngsters. They are in a catch-22 situation: they can't find work without experience and they can't get experience without a job. And we have some senior citizens too. "We have a wonderful workforce. "But we won't be using the JobCentre again."

Scarlets coach Simon Easterby expects next generation to deliver

SIMON Easterby hopes the Scarlets' next generation will deliver this season after getting a taste of senior action in the friendly with London Welsh.

Easterby gave a host of youngsters a chance to impress as his team drew 16-16 with the Exiles at the Kassam Stadium on Sunday.

And the Scarlets coach has told his pack of rising stars that they will be required when competitive action gets under way.

"We had an opportunity to blood young players and I was pleased to see eight debutants coming on in the game and getting their first taste of Scarlets rugby," Easterby said.

"We are going to rely on a number of these players throughout the season and the depth in our squad is very important. We have to be prepared to build depth to the side we pick each week and that's exactly what these games allow us to do.

"There were a lot of errors in the game but we came through it in the end to get the draw. Heads could have gone down and we could have thrown in the towel with ten or 12 minutes to go, but we stayed in there and produced a nice try in the end to bring us level. Hopefully these players making their debuts will have learned quite a bit from the experience and we, as a coaching group, will take a lot from it."

The draw was a landmark occasion for back-rower Josh Turnbull, who chalked up his Scarlets centenary in Oxford.

"I was really pleased to see Josh get his 100th appearance," Easterby added. "Josh has showed himself to be a committed and hard-working Scarlet."

POLICE are not treating the death of a man in Port Talbot as suspicious. The town has been left in shock following the discovery of a body on waste ground in the Baglan Moors area. Police were called to the far edge of playing fields off Seaway Parade and near Western Avenue at 4.30pm on Sunday where a 45-year-old man had been found. On Sunday evening officers were still at the scene shortly before 8pm, along with the body. The identity of the man has yet to be released, but police have confirmed that he was aged 45. A South Wales Police spokesman confirmed that it was a non-suspicious death and that an investigation is continuing. "We are not looking for anyone in connection with the death," he said. "The coroner has been informed." Scores of people have expressed their shock of the incident on Facebook and Twitter. Aberavon councillor Tony Taylor said: "Our thoughts are with the family and friends and we hope that the police come to a determination soon." Kevin Cannings from Afan Dale, which is near to where the body had been found, said he had been out of the area but had been informed of the incident. "It is surreal," he said. "We don't know the circumstances behind it. It is quite shocking." Sandfields East councillor Lella James added that she was very sadden to hear about the death. "It is shocking for the community of Western Avenue," she said.

BLAZING weather made this Bank Holiday the "best in years" for businesses across the Swansea and Gower coast. Sunbathers, surfers and swimmers made the most of the sunshine — bringing buckets, spades and much needed visitors to the award-winning beaches and surrounding businesses. Camelia Fragiacomo, owner of the Langland Brasserie, said: "With this weather we have been doing fantastically. This is the first summer bank holiday we have had with complete sunshine all day — which makes a lot of difference. "The restaurant was full, the terrace was full and the beach was full. This is the best bank holiday weekend we've had for years." By late morning, Langland, Caswell and Swansea Bay beaches were swarming with people hoping to make the most of the long weekend. At Llangennith surfers took to the waves in droves while walkers swarmed over the hillsides. For those with ice-cream on the menu, the queues stayed long throughout the day. Daniel Gilmour, of Verdi's Cafe in Mumbles, said: "We're very busy at the moment, and have been really busy all over the bank holiday weekend. "It's much better this year than it was last year, or even the year before, because we didn't have the weather. We knew it would be a nice bank holiday, so we were well prepared." Tourists also flooded into the area for the summer bank holiday, booking up hotels and holiday accommodation in advance to secure their places. Veronica Short, owner of the Worm's Head Hotel, said: "We were fully booked up before the bank holiday, but trade has been up a lot this year. The car park is very busy, and there are loads of people walking past with their surfboards and little dinghies."

FORMER Vetch field favourites will once again pull on the famous black and white shirts next month, to raise cash for Ty Olwyn Hospice. Players including Lee Trundle, Michael Howard, Andrew Mumford, Jon Coates, Chris Todd, Martin Thomas and James Thomas have all agreed to take part in the event at The Dingle in Morriston, after answering an appeal from Swans fan Anthony Jee. The 29-year-old, from Plasmarl, decided to organise the event in gratitude to the hospice, which cared for his mother. Caroline Jee had been suffering from lung cancer, and passed away in May. Railway worker Anthony said: "My mother had only been ill for a short while, and in that time she sought comfort and support from the Ty Olwyn Hospice. "She visited there weekly to take part in activities and speak to people in similar circumstances. "They also provided support to my family during times of worry and uncertainty during my mam's illness. "I feel the work they do is incredible and hope to raise some money to see their work continue long into the future, which is just what my mam would have wanted." Anthony, aged 29, has been given a helping hand to arrange the charity game by friend Thomas Todd, brother of former Swan Chris Todd. Anthony added: "During this difficult time I have been fortunate to have the support of friends and family. "But I would like to take this opportunity to thank my good friend Thomas Todd who has helped me organise this event." More players are to be confirmed to take part in the match, which kicks off on Sunday, September 8. It will be followed by an auction and raffle at The Dingle clubhouse following the game. Anyone wanting to donate prizes can contact Mr Jee at anthonyjee@hotmail.co.uk

INVESTIGATIONS are continuing into a lunchtime sex assault in a cemetery. The lone female victim was attacked on Saturday as she walked through Oystermouth cemetery. Police are continuing to appeal for anyone with information about the incident to come forward. Meanwhile Mumbles councillor Anthony Colburn said the community had been left shocked and dismayed by the attack — and he urged anyone would to help the investigation to contact police. He said: "Our sympathy goes to the lady involved and we are extremely keen that the perpetrator is apprehended as soon as possible. "I and the community are shocked and dismayed at the news. "I was very surprised that the incident took place in broad daylight. It is extremely shocking that something like this should have happened — I am sure that any members of the public with any information will contact the police immediately." The attack happened around 1.10pm on Saturday. Police have issued a description of a man they want to talk to in connection with the incident — he is described as being white, with short brown hair, aged in his late 20s to early 30s, "over" 5 ft 8 in tall, and of a muscular build. He was wearing a light coloured T-shirt, brown knee-length shorts, and flip-flops which were possibly white in colour. Police say they are keen to speak to a man and woman who may have seen the victim running off from the attack towards Slade Road. The incident is not being linked to last week's sexual assault in the LC leisure centre. *Can you help? Call South Wales Police in Swansea on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111

CHELSEA boss Jose Mourinho has insisted that Juan Mata remains an important part of his plans and will not be going anywhere. Chelsea's £30milion move for Anzhi Makhachkala's Willian has increased speculation that somebody will now have to be sold. But the Blues boss said: "He is very important for me and very important for Chelsea. "The stories that are coming out are nonsense stories. He goes nowhere." MANCHESTER United boss David Moyes has said the club have not made a move for Tottenham's Gareth Bale. The Welsh star has looked set for Real Madrid for most of the summer with the Spanish giants having offered a world record £86m for the 24-year-old. Following the goalless draw with Chelsea on Monday night, Moyes was asked if Manchester United was that club and the Scot responded with "no". Bale was expected to return to training yesterday on Tuesday morning having not played since a pre-season friendly against Swindon in July. Regarding possible interest in Bale, Moyes said after the Chelsea match: "I said at the start that Manchester United will always be interested in the best players and we'll always be looking to try and improve the team." Etien Velikonja is growing increasingly frustrated at CARDIFF CITY and plans to leave the club in search of regular football.

Duke and Duchess of Cambridge thank council for real nappy pack

Carmarthenshire Council has been thanked by Prince William and Kate for the real nappy trial pack sent to them after the birth of Prince George. The council's waste and recycling team put together the special pack to raise awareness of the benefits of real nappies. They received a letter from the couple's private secretary which read: "The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have asked me to write and thank you so much for the real nappy covers and liners, which you so kindly sent on the occasion of the birth of their son, Prince George. "Their Royal Highnesses have been overwhelmed by all the wonderful messages and gifts they have received and the Royal couple, their parents and families are so thrilled at this special time. "The Duke and Duchess would have me send you their warmest thanks and best wishes." Figures show that an estimated 200 million disposables are thrown away in Wales each year. Councillor Colin Evans, executive board member for technical services, said an increasing number of parents are discovering the benefits of real nappies. "We are trying to encourage more parents to give them a go instead of using disposables which end up in landfill and is bad for the environment," he added. For further information on real nappies visit the council's website or call Carmarthenshire Direct on 01267 234567.

Police hunt balaclava-wearing burglar

POLICE are hunting for a masked raider who was disturbed while burgling a house in the middle of the day. The man was in a bedroom of the Townhill house when a relative of the homeowner called at the address — noticing a broken pane of glass in a groundfloor window she went inside to investigate, and as she climbed the stairs the balaclava-wearing burglar ran down the stairs towards her and pushed past her. He then made-off from the Gwent Road house on foot. Police say the woman was unhurt but was very frightened by the experience, and they are appealing for anyone with information about the incident to come forward. South Wales Police detective constable David Welham said: "This burglary has happened in the middle of the day, and at a property which is located right in the middle of a residential area. "As we are in the height of summer it would be very unusual for a person to be wearing a balaclava in the middle of the day. "I am appealing to the residents not only of Gwent Road but also to those in the surrounding streets — if they saw this person or have any relevant information please come forward." The break-in happened around 12.25pm on Thursday, August 22, though police have only just released details. Police have issued a description of a man they want to talk to — he described as being between 5ft 6in and 5ft 8in tall, and of a thin build. Ben Foster ruled out of West Brom v Swansea City

WEST Brom have been dealt a blow ahead of Sunday's match against Swansea City after Ben Foster was ruled out for three months with a foot injury. The England goalkeeper suffered a stress fracture in his right foot during last weekend's 0-0 draw with Everton and is set to undergo surgery. In Foster's absence, the Baggies will hope to call upon Wales stopper Boaz Myhill, who only returned to training on Monday following a hand injury. With Myhill unavailable for the stalemate at Everton, West Brom had to replace Foster in the 78th minute with rookie Luke Daniels. Daniels is the Baggies' longest-serving player, but his 12-minute cameo at Goodison Park was remarkably his competitive debut for the club. The 25-year-old is likely to be on the bench again on Sunday, when West Brom welcome Swansea to the Hawthorns.

SWANSEA City will be without at least two probable starters when they fly out to Romania for their Europa League play-off second leg tie against Petrolul Ploiesti. Winger Nathan Dyer will miss out again after picking up a hamstring injury in Swansea's thumping win over the Romanians last week. And left-back Neil Taylor is also expected to be absent as he continues to nurse a dead leg suffered in the first leg. With Swansea in charge of the Petrolul tie, it could be that boss Michael Laudrup chooses to leave one or two more of his senior stars at home when his squad fly out to Eastern Europe on Wednesday morning.

SWANSEA City are in a queue of clubs looking to do business on a forward before transfer windows close all over Europe. Competition is fierce in the late summer market, particularly where players capable of scoring goals are concerned. Hence Swansea are lining up a move for Peter Odemwingie, a 32-year-old who has had his problems at West Bromwich Albion. And hence the Baggies are able to demand a significant fee even for a player who has surely kicked his last ball in an Albion shirt. Generally speaking, clubs do not want to lose players who might find the target for them. And they are even more reluctant to let them go at this time of year given that their chances of finding a replacement would be slim at best — hence Michael Laudrup has stressed that selling Michu is out of the question at this late stage. So the job of finding forwards is not easy, particularly when the club on the hunt do not have money to burn. That is the situation Swansea are in now. It was similar in January when, after selling Danny Graham to Sunderland, Laudrup was on the hunt for a new forward. Back then Swansea did not get one. Huw Jenkins is convinced it will be a different story at the end of this window — but the options are not plentiful. Who would you like to see at the Liberty? Vote in our poll.

Petition handed in against plans for speed bumps in Port Talbot

UNHAPPY traders and residents have joined together to fight against speed bumps proposed for Margam Road. A petition with 200 signatures along with around 40 letters and many calls and emails have been sent to Neath Port Talbot Council calling for it to rethink traffic calming measures. The authority is planning to place speed cushions at 16 locations between the Twelve Knights pub and Woodfield Street. It is part of the Harbour Way scheme to encourage people to use the new relief road. Marco Tambini, who owns the Express Cafe at Tollgate Shops, said all the traders in the area feared that the road changes would affect passing trade. "Nobody wants them," he said. "We fear it would kill off trade. "As well as the petition, other residents have also send in their own letters, emails and have been phoning the council. "I feel happy that everyone has come together to try and do their best to prevent this from happening. "I hope the council listen to us." All sections of the £107 million Harbour Way relief road are now accessible — but further work still needs to be done before the official opening which will take place in mid-October. Taibach councillors Anthony Taylor and John Rogers, along with Margam councillor Rob Jones, have expressed their reservations about the planned scheme. Mr Rogers said he feared the people of Margam and Taibach will loose out if the speed bumps go ahead. "The message to the council is quite clear — think again," he said. Mr Jones said the cost of the measures are included in the Harbour Way project. "If we don't spend it, the money will go into that void," he said. "I would rather the money spent on road safety issues." In a previous statement a council spokesperson said the members objections had been noted and will be considered as part of the public consultation process, which ended on Friday. The spokesman added that although local authorities are only required to publicise such changes through advertisements placed in the local press, the council completed a letter drop to the most affected residents. He said: "As such, 160 letters were sent to the properties in the immediate vicinity of the proposed humps. "The local members were also notified."
