THE sky's the limit as far as free entertainment goes in Swansea this weekend.

The city is hosting the third Wales National Air Show — and the Red Arrows are performing on Saturday and Sunday.

Other highlights are a Battle of Britain memorial flight comprising a Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster bomber.

A Royal Navy Wildcat helicopter is due to put in an appearance, as are the Red Bull Matadors aerobatics team, Breitling wing walkers, RAF Falcons and an ear-splitting RAF Typhoon.

Those inspired by the airborne antics will have the chance on the ground to try out a Red Arrow simulator ride, Red Arrow Hawk, a memorial flight simulator, army assault course, plus inflatables, cookery demonstrations and a funfair.

The air show is organised by Swansea Council. Cabinet member for regeneration, councillor Nick Bradley, looked forward to a "great occasion".

He said: "The air show is a huge event for Swansea and it's designed to showcase our city and encourage people to spend time here."

Tony McGetrick, of Tourism Swansea Bay, said: "The return of the Wales National Air Show is a great start to the summer holidays and a reminder of how important events are for both residents and visitors to Swansea Bay.

"Past air shows have attracted over 100,000 people to Swansea. This is fantastic, not only because it puts Swansea on the map as a city that's capable of hosting major events, but also because it generates lots of business."

Carla Tonkin, the manager of Abertawe Ale House, Oystermouth Road, said: "It's good for us. We're doing a barbecue and bacon rolls on a hot plate in the morning."

Saturday is also D-Day for a 200-mile Wales Air Ambulance walk, which leaves from Swansea. Welsh tenor Rhys Meirion and friends are kicking off their trek around Wales with an evening concert on Friday at 7pm at the city's Dragon Hotel. To book, call Paul Canning on 07811 270921.
