RESIDENTS in Swansea will be given the chance to have their say on the city's future housing policy to make sure new developments and estates aren't over-crowded.

Swansea Council is currently drafting new guidelines aimed at potential new developers wanting to build in the city.

More than 800 homes are built in Swansea each year and the council has put the plans out to consultation for residents and interested parties to air their views.

June Burtonshaw, cabinet member for place, said: "Anyone who wants to have a say in the way new homes and neighbourhoods are designed and laid out should take the opportunity to have their say on these draft guides.

"They will help make sure there is enough open space in future housing developments so children can play and streets become more than just a place for cars to park.

"Coupled with this is a desire to improve the accessibility of new neighbourhoods by providing convenient local facilities and high quality open spaces which are linked to people's houses by attractive, pedestrian friendly streets."

The public consultation will begin on July 4, with the closing date for comments August 22.

The council is also organising drop in sessions between 1pm and 4pm on July 31 and August 1 at the Central Library at the Civic Centre.

Councillor Sybil Crouch, cabinet member for sustainability, added: "The design guidance will encourage house-builders not to have a standardised approach to developments which can sometimes appear as if they have put in as many homes as possible rather than making the most of the local environment.

"The draft guides we're putting out for public consultation will aim to create a framework that will encourage a unique character for each development to create a healthy, sustainable and more local feel."
