THE grandson of Rhossili-born Petty Officer Edgar Evans, the first Welshman to reach the South Pole, who perished with Scott and the team on their return journey, will be in the city centre today collecting towards a statue of his famous ancestor.
The team needs to raise £90,000 for the statue which will be erected in front of the museum.
John Evans will be joined by members of Swansea's air and sea cadets near the entrance to Swansea Market.
Mr Evans, who was in Cardiff yesterday to mark the centenary of return of the ship, Terra Nova, that carried Captain Robert Scott and his team on their doomed expedition.
Mr Evans said: "We know that these are difficult times but the finished statue will be a great addition to Swansea and it is long over due that we pay tribute to Edgar Evans."
