SWANSEA sea cadets will be cheering on their commanding officer as he pulls a field gun from the city to Mumbles and back.

They were staging the fundraiser from the Swansea Observatory this morning at 9am and were making their way to Knab Rock car park for a display at around 12.30pm.

The city's Lord Mayor, June Stanton, has been invited along to the event.

A team of cadets will be collecting en route as Lieutenant Commander Bill Davies pulls the 100-year-old gun along, which was similar to those used during the Boer War.

Helen Banner, a committee member of Swansea Sea Cadets, said all the cash raised would go towards buying a Trinity vessel, which featured in the Thames Diamond Jubilee River Pageant.

She said the cadets also need the cash towards meeting the cost of a £20,000 safety powerboat.

She said they were on course to buy the piece of Jubilee history.

"The boat we wanted, the Trinity, was £3,000, but when we went to buy it the price went up to £4,500," she said.

"We also need a power- boat as well to act as a safety boat.

"We need to raise £4,000 towards the boat before we can put in a bid for Lottery funding. The cadets can't go on the water unless they have a safety boat.

"If they have the boats it will mean they will be able to go out in Swansea Bay and they will be able to experience sea conditions."

She added: "It's sad that they live by the sea but can't go out on the sea at the moment."

Following the fundraiser the cadets will be holding a party in their base at Pilot House Wharf, Swansea.
