A MULTI-MILLION pound investment in Morriston will help with the "smooth running" of the hospital.
Welsh Health Minister Mark Drakeford has announced a £4.805million investment in a new combined services centre. The centre will be based in a partly refurbished building with a new extension at the north of the Morriston Hospital site.
It will house facilities management services, non clinical support services vital for the smooth running of the hospital, a spokeswoman said.
Mr Drakeford added: "Good infrastructure and reliable support services are vital in the NHS. The development will improve the working environment for the staff, and ensure key support such as the stores and chiller rooms are close to the clinical services.
"The new centre is integral to Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board's (ABMU) strategic plan to develop and improve clinical services and I am delighted to announce this investment."
The project is part of the HealthVision Swansea programme of investment, supporting the reorganisation of services between Morriston and Singleton hospitals and the modernisation of Morriston.
The combined services centre will also include goods and stores, specialist freezers, a plant room and supporting infrastructure and allow for essential
service yard improvements.
Paul Stauber, director of planning for ABMU, said: "The new combined services department is the fourth phase in our programme to replace Second World War buildings with more modern accommodation.
"It will also base key support services in a more appropriate location on the hospital site. Once the new unit is up and running, we can demolish the out of date buildings, enabling us to continue our transformation of Morriston Hospital."
