JUST when you thought it was safe to go back into the kitchen.
A restaurant manager had a shock when he received a beast from Carmarthen Bay in one of his fish deliveries.
The tope shark, which weighed 19.5kg, was caught off the coast of Burry Port on Wednesday night before being delivered to the Fish at 85 restaurant, in Pontcanna, Cardiff, as part of a consignment of fish.
Restaurant manager, John Lester 38, said: "Fishermen are restricted to only catching five per month so we don't often get deliveries of this type of shark. We only had three delivered to us last year.
"We've never had one this large."
The tope shark, which is also known as soupfin shark and school shark, is the largest of Britain's inshore native sharks and is known for its sharp teeth and rough skin.
Now customers at the restaurant will be able to take a bite from the monster catch in the form of shark steaks with Mr Lester hoping it will land between 20 to 30 one-and-a-half pound portions.
He said: "We will probably use the shark for steak depending on what the customers want.
"It would taste great in a fish curry – it has a lovely, gamey flavour.
"Lots of people don't eat shark anymore, but it has a lot of flavour and is lovely in exotic dishes such as Goan fish curry."
