PROTESTS against the so-called "bedroom tax" will take place up and down the country today.

In Swansea campaigners against the new housing benefits rules were set to meet in Castle Square at 1pm.

Organisers want to see the changes — where claimants will lose a percentage of their benefits if they have a spare bedroom — scrapped.

Union Unite said it community activists would be fully involved in local protests.

The event is taking place ahead of the changes which are being phased in from Monday.

General secretary Len McCluskey said: "Unite will fully support communities which face being torn apart, with families being forced to move elsewhere and children being uprooted from their schools with the adverse impact on their education this will have."
