SWANSEA schoolchildren will be getting new books as part of a bilingual literacy scheme.

The Pori Drwy Stori project will see all reception children getting a free book bag to keep this coming term.

Inside is a special version of Beatrix Potter's The Tale of a Naughty Little Rabbit and Ty Bach Twt I Miss Trwyn Smwt, a new Welsh adaptation by Mererid Hopwood of a book by Petr Horacek.

Schools will also be getting free support packs to use along with the books, including a hand puppet, flash cards and extra resources. And libraries are getting involved too as part of their work to boost literacy.

Swansea libraries will host events and giving parents helpful pointers.

Writer Julia Jarman, author of children's favourites such as the Big Red Bath, launched the project in Swansea.

She said: "Reading is essential. How can anyone manage without it? It's not just about being good at school. How can you go on the internet, read a food label, text or communicate with friends on Facebook, or apply for job without reading?

"I hope this programme will encourage more families to enjoy and benefit from storytime at home."
