Premier League transfer news: Reading boss on Danny Graham

READING boss Brian McDermott has admitted he is a fan of Danny Graham.
The Swansea City striker is due to have talks with boss Michael Laudrup over his Liberty Stadium future.
Reading are among the clubs said to be monitoring the situation — Norwich are another — but McDermott says he is impressed by the way Graham has progressed over the years.
"He's Swansea's player and I think there is a bit of interest in him," he said. "He's scored a couple of goals lately in the league.
"I've known Danny since he was at Carlisle. He's another who has developed over time."

Joe Cole has completed his free transfer from Liverpool to West Ham.
The 31-year-old has signed an 18-month contract at Upton Park.
Cole said: "It is a great move for me.
"This is where I learnt my trade and I'm happy to have another chance to be here. I've always loved West Ham and I hope I can give the club a few memorable seasons."

Sunderland striker Fraizer Campbell would be interested in a move to Hull City, according to the player's father.
Hull boss Steve Bruce has confirmed he would be interested in taking Campbell to the KC Stadium.
Campbell's father and adviser, Keith Campbell, said: "He is very impressed with the way they play and feels he would fit. He is also a big fan of Steve Bruce."

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is tracking Schalke midfielder Lewis Holtby.
Fresh faces are expected at the Emirates during the January window, and Wenger said: "We have looked at Holtby, and have played against him. Our scouts are kept on alert."

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert is considering a shock January move for Manchester City and England defender Joloen Lescott. Lescott, a Villa supporter, is out of favour at the Etihad Stadium. "Joleon has been a top player and still is," said Lambert. "He's a top, top player. "I will sit with the rest of the staff and see what I can do. But I don't think you can ever dismiss it whenever you are talking about a top player." Chelsea have completed the signing of  Demba Ba from Newcastle. The striker has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract at Stamford Bridge. Ba joins the European champions for an undisclosed fee, believed to match the £7.5m release clause in his contract at Newcastle. He said: "It feels good to be here, I'm very happy and very proud. "When the club who won the Champions League wants you, the decision is very easy." QPR boss Harry Redknapp is planning a transfer window move for Tottenham's Jake Livermore. Redknapp is also considering loan moves for Robbie Keane and Tim Cahill.

A HERO soldier who served on the frontline in Afghanistan has been found hanged at his Swansea home.

Trooper Robert Llewellyn Griffiths, of 1st The Queen's Dragoon Guards, also known as the Welsh Cavalry, was discovered at the property in Oldway, Bishopston, on Saturday evening.

He was only 24.

An Army spokesman said: "Police are investigating the death of a soldier who was serving with 1st The Queen's Dragoon Guards.

"Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time."

The regiment returned from a challenging seven-month tour of Helmand Province last April.

Explosive

Both Lieutenant David Boyce and Lance Corporal Richard Scanlon were killed while serving with the regiment during the same tour of duty in Afghanistan.

They died in November 2011 when their vehicle struck an improvised explosive device (IED) and there were a number of service personnel wounded.

Soldiers from the Dale Barracks-based regiment in Paderborn, Germany, were involved in rooting out the Taliban, attacking their command centres and destroying their weapons.

These included a stash of bomb-making equipment.

Troops marched on Swansea as part of their Freedom of the City last May to mark their return from operations in Helmand Province.

The regiment has previously served in Afghanistan during 2008/09.

A police spokesman said the soldier's death was not being treated as suspicious and his family had been informed.

"South Wales Police in Swansea are investigating the unexplained death of a 24-year-old man whose body was found at a house in Oldway, Bishopston, at about 5.15pm on Saturday, December 29, 2012," he said.

"There are believed to be no suspicious circumstances.

"The next of kin and HM Coroner have been informed."

Port Talbot actor Michael Sheen drops in on Christmas Day lunch in Resolven

AFTER playing everyone from Tony Blair to Brian Clough, Hollywood star Michael Sheen can now add Santa to his CV.

He made a surprise appearance at a Christmas Day lunch for 60 people who otherwise would have been home alone.

The festive lunch at the Sardis Baptist Church Hall in Resolven was organised by Port Talbot nurse Caroline Ashwood, helped by a team of supporters including her mum Mary Ashwood and 15-year-old daughter Ellys.

"I wrote to Michael to ask if there was anything he could do to help," said Caroline, who works at the King's Surgery in Port Talbot Resource Centre.

"Out of the blue on Christmas Eve I had an e-mail from him, saying he had been thinking about it and really wanted to contribute.

"He asked if I would mind him coming along and reading some Dylan Thomas. I told him yes straight away."

Michael, from Baglan, turned up just as the diners had finished singing Christmas carols.

"He pulled up a chair and sat by the Christmas tree, reading some Dylan Thomas," said Caroline. "Then he mingled and took part in the quiz.

"One old chap remarked how much he liked Dylan Thomas and said it had made his Christmas. Michael sat with him for ages, just talking. He was lovely, so down to earth."

After the party was over, Michael e-mailed Caroline to say how much he had enjoyed it and stating he wanted to be part of it again this Christmas.

"He's just amazing," she said.

Caroline first had the idea in 2011, when she was a volunteer driver for a Salvation Army Christmas Day lunch in Swansea.

She started fundraising last March, with raffles taking place in King's Surgery.

The money needed came rolling in, including raffles at King's Surgery and Riverside Surgery, which is also in the Port Talbot Resource Centre.

A group from Tesco in Port Talbot gave £100 from their Lottery syndicate, while the Towers Spa and Restaurant in Jersey Marine supplied the meal.

Two minibuses to transport the diners were provided by Sardis Baptist Church and Christchurch in Aberdare, while a teacher from Swansea's Olchfa School volunteered to drive one of them. Among those who enjoyed the meal was a woman who later phoned Caroline to say it was the first time she'd had a Christmas for seven years.

"One man in his early 30s told me he had been in and out of care homes since he was 12 and this was the first Christmas he had spent with someone," added Caroline.

"It's feedback like that which makes it all worthwhile."

As well as keeping others entertained, Michael Sheen has also been entertained himself — at the Swansea Grand panto Cinderella, which he attended with his family on Wednesday night.

Tweeting about it, ugly sister Mike Doyle — MikeDoyle Comedy — said: "It was so nice to have Michael Sheen and his family come to see our #panto @swanseagrand last night #topbloke."

Llanelli MP Nia Griffith slams rail prices between the town, Swansea, Cardiff and Carmarthen

RISING rail fares have been condemned by Llanelli MP Nia Griffith.

She said fares between Carmarthen, Llanelli, Swansea and Cardiff had gone up between 4.2 per cent and 6 per cent on January 2.

The changes will have a massive impact on commuters and the local economy, the MP claimed.

"How can we encourage people to get out and look for job opportunities around the area when we are seeing local fares go up?" Ms Griffith added.

"The official figure of an average 4.2 per cent rise is a smokescreen, masking much higher rises which are hitting hard-pressed commuters just at a time when they are already struggling to make ends meet with inflation and standstill wages.

"The peak time fare from Llanelli to Cardiff is up by 6 per cent, so are daily fares to Swansea and Carmarthen, and the 5.4 per cent rise in the Llanelli to Swansea season ticket hit national news, as one of the highest season ticket increases."

Don't buy cats and dogs from unknown sources — Welsh Government warning

ANYONE considering getting a pet this new year is being asked to be careful.

The Welsh Government has warned people to think twice as to whether they can cope with a pet.

Environment Minister John Griffiths said: "As we enter a new year some people may be thinking about purchasing a pet dog or cat. I would ask anyone thinking about getting a pet to make sure that they understand what is involved in looking after an animal properly, including the veterinary costs, and to ensure they know where the animal has come from.

"If you do not know where your animal has come you will have no assurance that proper care has been taken of its health and welfare nor that it has been socialised properly. This could potentially lead to behavioural problems and costly veterinary expenses."

Chief vet Dr Christianne Glossop urged people not to buy animals from unknown sources, particularly online, because they may have diseases.

Sketty architect, paralympian star and religious leaders with links to Swansea honoured as inspirational Brits

ARCHITECTS, swimmers and religious leaders with links to Swansea have been honoured on a list of inspirational British people.

Paralympic star Ellie Simmonds, retiring Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams and architect Phil Coffey all made it on to the Independent on Sunday's 101 Great Brits of 2012 who have inspired, moved and uplifted the nation.

Mr Coffey is originally from Sketty and set up his London- based business Coffey Architects in 2005 to pursue his passion for architecture.

The architect, a former Olchfa Comprehensive School pupil, appears on the list of Great Brits in between such national heavyweights as Lord Sebastian Coe and England Cricket captain Alastair Cook.

He was 2012's Young Architect of the Year.

Mr Coffey's company also won the Stephen Lawrence Prize for best UK project on a budget of less than £1m for a primary school library in Kentish Town in 2011.

The firm won plaudits for another ambitious library at the British Film Institute in 2012.

Swimmer Ellie Simmonds has made this year's Independent on Sunday list.

The teenager, from Aldridge in the West Midlands, has won over the British people at the Beijing Paralympic Games in 2008 when she swam her way to a record-breaking double gold.

This year, she did it again, adding two gold medals, as well as a silver and bronze to her sizeable collection.

And, the 18-year-old who trains and lives in Swansea was appointed an OBE in this year's New Year's Honours List.

Her mother Val Simmonds said it was a lovely compliment to see Ellie's name feature on the list which also includes James Bond actor Daniel Craig and Take That star Gary Barlow.

She said: "It is always nice to know that people see her like that. She seems to evoke reaction, particularly off young people with the letters she receives.

"People write to see they have been inspired by her. She gets a lot of letters off children."

Ellie is back in training now which will last for the next three weeks in South Africa.

Former Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams' listing alongside the sporting star came just days before he became Baron Williams of Oystermouth in the New Year's Honours List.

Dr Williams was born in Ystradgynlais in 1950 and will now have the chance to sit in the House of Lords as a life peer.

The Independent on Sunday also listed its "plonkers" of the year which included I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here star and MP Nadine Dorries, Lord Justice Leveson and Premier League football which the paper claimed was left looking like an over-hyped pseudo-contest between overpaid shirt-pullers and divers after a summer of Olympian achievement and sportsmanship.
