PUPIL power is being used to help drive home a road safety message to parents.
PCSOs in Mumbles have organised a competition for youngsters at Newton Primary to design hard-hitting posters following concerns about parking outside the school gate.
The winning design will be turned into a letter which will be sent to all parents.
Mumbles PCSO Lucy Lewis said there had been a great response to the competition — and that she and fellow community support officer Victoria Lloyd would have a hard time choosing the best.
She said: "Road safety and parking issues are the priorities that are always raised by parents and residents in the area.
"We have a close working relationship with the school, and we thought it would be a good idea to get the pupils involved in a campaign — so we have organised a competition to design a road safety poster.
"We've had more than 80 entries, which is great.
"Hopefully having a poster designed by the children will mean that the message really hits home with parents — it will be a safety message coming from the youngsters not from us."
The winner of the competition will be revealed on February 5, when the PCSOs will visit the Slade Road school.
The subject of parking around schools in Swansea has long been highlighted in the pages of the Evening Post, with problems reported from Pontlliw to Bonymaen.
Schools, councillors and police have tried a range of tactics to encourage responsible parking.
One mum with a child at Newton Primary welcomed the creative competition, and said there were sometimes problems at the school.
She said: "There are often cars around the school — Slade Road is narrow and it can cause problems.
"The competition is a great idea — anything that helps to raise road safety issue has to be good.
"Hopefully the posters will have a lot of impact."
