A BRAVE Port Talbot mum has lost her battle with cancer.
Gina Herman, from Tan-y- Groes, had been suffering from a dangerous form of skin cancer.
Her close friend Tracey Lewis described the mum of four as very courageous.
"I would like to say what an honour it was to have known Gina and I couldn't have wished for a better friend," she said.
Last year health bosses turned Mrs Herman down to receive the life-prolonging drug Yervoy (ipilimumab), which treats melanoma. But her friends and family wanted her to have it whatever the cost.
In September a group of her nearest and dearest put their heads together to think of ways they could raise the £80,000 needed. By October generous members of the community helped to raise £50,000 and Mrs Herman, 44, began her treatment, and by the end of the year they was close to reaching the total. But her courageous battle with cancer came to an end on Saturday.
Ms Lewis added: "It was my pleasure to have tried my best to help this family. It is with deepest sorrow we could not extend her life."
Ms Lewis said Gina's family wanted to thank those who helped raise all the money over the past few months.
"They want to send their sending their deepest gratitude to everyone involved with the appeal and that all donations were very much appreciated," she said.
