CONCERNS have been raised about a group of horses who were left to forage for food in the snow.

Worried residents say three animals were left out as temperatures plummeted at the site near Clase Social Club, Pengwern Road, Clase.

They say following steps by the Welsh Government to encourage the micro-chipping and passports for horses, more needed to be done to protect the animals.

Swansea Councillor June Burtonshaw, who is the Cabinet Member for Place, said a meeting was due to be held over the issue, and she added action needed to be taken.

A resident, who did not wish to be named for fear or reprisals, said the horses weren't moved until Saturday.

He said: "The conditions were terrible and the horses were left out forging for food near Clase Social Club.

"I tried to get in touch with Swansea Council's environment department on Friday but I couldn't get hold of anyone.

"Swansea Council needs to do more to enforce the law.

"Councillor June Burtonshaw has mentioned she will be holding a meeting."

He added: "Swansea Council needs to take on board what the Welsh Government is doing.

"We need to make sure that horses are properly looked after and that they are being chipped or issued with passports."

Councillor Burtonshaw said she believed horses should not be treated in that way and a meeting would be held in the months ahead on the matter. She added: "It's terrible, no-one should do that to animals.

"It's bad enough being cold without having to search for food.

"Someone should have gone to check on them.

"There needs to be tighter legislation on this issue.

"We are going to have a meeting with the Cyrenians who are looking to do a project on horses.

"It's a Swansea-wide issue — I have got horses in the field behind my home."
