THE blast of winter brought major disruption to hospital services in South West Wales.

Outpatient appointments across Swansea, Neath Port Talbot and Bridgend were cancelled due to the snowy conditions.

Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board said they would be focusing their resources on emergency services while the bad weather continued.

Outpatient clinics were cancelled at all hospitals yesterday and were again today, while some planned operations had also been postponed.

Health bosses apologised for any inconvenience caused to patients — and thanked their staff for making the effort to get into work.

A spokeswoman said: "Snow is causing disruption to our service and this is likely to continue over the weekend.

"We will be focusing on ensuring our emergency and urgent care services are able to cope during this period and therefore will be canceling outpatient clinics. Some planned operations will also be affected.

"We apologise for the disruption and inconvenience during this time.

"We are grateful to our staff for making their way into work under difficult conditions."

Hospitals in Carmarthenshire ran as usual, with no snow disruption affecting clinics or appointments.

A Hywel Dda spokeswoman said both Llanelli's Prince Philip Hospital and Glangwili in Carmarthen, were unaffected by the weather.

But a message was circulated to those unable to get to appointments to inform the relevant departments.

A spokeswoman said: "If you have an appointment and you are unable to travel because of the weather please call the number on your appointment letter to let us know.

"By calling this number we can also let you know the status of your appointment if you are unsure."

Hospitals further west in the board area were affected by the weather, with clinics cancelled at Withybush and Tenby hospitals due to staff being unable to travel in.
