Llanelli mayor's call for powers

MAYOR of Llanelli Winston Lemon will tonight push forward with his bid to win greater powers for the town council.

Mr Lemon's fight to win greater independence for the town will again come up for discussion at tonight's council meeting.

"It will go to the vote to see if the council support it or not," he said.

"I will be asking for a recorded vote to see which councillors support it and which do not."

Mr Lemon's call for the town council to be a unitary authority, wrestling away powers given to Carmarthenshire Council, was kicked into touch by the town council last month with a call for greater financial detail.

But Mr Lemon said he believes the authority could actually benefit from any switch of power.

"We could be quids in if the funding goes per head of population, as Llanelli has the biggest population in the county," he said.

Mr Lemon rubbished concerns voiced by Labour councillor Bill Thomas, who had warned that the council tax could double.

Mr Lemon said: "We would do it properly."
