LLANELLI'S remarkable generosity has shone through, giving hundreds of people a helping hand over Christmas.

The Antioch Centre's festive appeal has reaped dividends at a time when added seasonal pressure sees more people than ever seeking help.

At the start of the month the volunteer-run centre launched a special appeal for food and clothes to help Llanelli's most vulnerable families over Christmas.

The centre has urged people to donate tins and dried food, as well as clothes and even furniture, which can all be dropped off at the centre on Copperworks Road.

Deb Chapman, centre manager of the Antioch Centre and Lifeshare — the food, clothes and furniture bank, said: "It's going really, really well. It's been brilliant.

"We are really overwhelmed with the generosity of people and the donations we have received.

"People have donated food items and other things such as toys and games.

"The majority of toys have come from Carmarthenshire Council's Toybox Appeal — so a big thanks goes to them," she added.

Mrs Chapman said the centre expected to dish out a massive 600kg of food in December — a rise on the 248kgs in November and 150kgs in October.

She explained that the festive period was a tough time for some people and as a result the centre sees more people in need of support.

"There is a rise in people coming to the centre because Christmas is a time of extra pressure," said Mrs Chapman.

"It is the pressure of the season with people having to provide more in the build up — this can have an impact on relationships."

Food, clothes and even furniture can be dropped off at the centre.
