New footbridge put in place across Tawe

A HUGE crane has installed a large, white footbridge in Swansea.

It was lowered across the River Tawe in Beaufort Road, off the A4067, and sits at a higher level than the existing one.

The work was part of a £7 million flood scheme aimed at improving protection for 300 businesses and homes in the Lower Swansea Valley.

New flood embankments have been built along the river, and a wetland habitat is being created at the former Liberty Stadium match day car park, Swansea Vale.

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) said the project would reduce flood risk by increasing the river capacity and raising low spots along the river banks.

NRW's Phil Pickersgill said: "Flood damage can have huge implications for businesses and the whole economy of an area."

The scheme is due for completion by the end of the year, with more landscaping works at Swansea Vale to take place in 2014.

Swansea Vale, Swansea Enterprise Park, Cwrt Llwyn Fedwyn, Tawe Street and Beaufort and Plasmarl industrial estates will all benefit from the new measures.

NRW is also undertaking a flood protection project near Pontarddulais and is proposing another in Penclawdd.
