Swansea drivers' mixed response to 20mph plans

A SAFETY scheme set to create 20mph zones outside 11 Swansea schools has sparked a debate.

Speed limits will also be reduced in the whole of the Sandfields — home of St Helen's and Christchurch schools — as part of the £200,000 council-run project.

In Swansea there are already 31 schools with 20mph sign- posted limits, while 16 have designated 20mph zones with traffic-calming measures.

While drivers have welcomed safety measures outside schools, some have questioned whether reduced speed limits should be in place 24 hours a day and on weekends.

Writing on the Evening Post's website Arnoldlane said: "I live by Bishop Gore school which has a 20 mph limit which I don't have a problem with. What I do object to is it applies 24/7/365 day and night."

He added: "What is the point of blanket 20 mph speed limits outside schools when there is no school such as now with the holidays. The 20mph should only apply between 7am and 7pm."

Dai_Chotomy agreed, adding: "The limit should only apply between the hours of 7am to 7pm Monday to Friday during term time."

On the Post's Facebook page, Mark Davies said: "It's already happened in Carmarthenshire.I think its a good idea we need to keep our children safe. There are some right idiots out there music blasting and speeding to get the high school girls attention regardless of safety."

However, for some the plans for new speed limits in these areas did not go far enough.

Zumba Townhill Swansea said: "I think they need to have these speed limits by parks too. Cars whizz around the corner by Jersey park, St Thomas. It's only a matter of time before a child gets hurt."

Calls have also been made for tougher parking enforcement around schools.

Peter Renney wrote: "Book any car parked on zig zag line outside of school, it not only blocks the road but is a hindrance to school children and stop them peaking outside schools."

While Jill Davies, who is a teacher herself said: "Do more to encourage parents when parking near school to park more sensibly would be good!

"The Welsh school in Llansamlet is terrible for driving past as people park anywhere and everywhere blocking traffic both ways."
