TOBIAS Webb will have the chance to claim the first title of his professional career when he takes on Joe Calzaghe's old sparring partner for the Welsh super- middleweight crown.

Nathan King had a front-line role in helping Wales's long-time world champion prepare for his many championship bouts.

Calzaghe used to turn to King because of the Mountain Ash man's ability to take a punch.

Now 31, King has fought for a world title himself, when he lost on points to Eric Teymour for the WBU's 12st championship in 2004.

Paul Boyce will promote the bout in Swansea in mid-February and he says it will be a huge night for Webb.

"He is a kid with all the potential in the world and this is the chance for him to win a title," said Boyce.

"If he can see off Nathan he will have the platform to start going places in his career.

"He is in Britain's top ten already and has only lost once since turning professional.

"At 24, he is ready for a Welsh title shot. He is a talent and I'm sure he will be determined to beat King."

King's durability makes him a dangerous fighter, though.

He has been in the paid ranks for 11 years and has forgotten more than many fighters will ever learn in the ring.

If his recent record isn't great, he has been boxing in decent company and is a rough-and-tumble fighter who will provide a perfect contrast to the Swansea stylist in the opposite corner.

"King is a tough man, a box fighter who never knows when he's beaten," said Boyce.

"He has fought around Europe and was used by Joe Calzaghe for a reason during all those years as a sparring partner.

"To me, it looks a 50-50 fight, a boxer versus a fighter, and Tobias will need to be on top of his game because King is capable of rising to the challenge.

"It could all come down to who works harder in training."

Chris Jenkins, Chris Ware, Darren Bushbye, Greg Pickin and Leon Finlay will feature on the undercard.
