A FORMER snooker hall in the Swansea Valley is set to reopen as a cafe.

Neath Port Talbot Council decided last year to close the snooker hall at Pontardawe Arts Centre and find alternative uses.

It received grants from the Arts Council of Wales and environmental organisation Wren totalling £145,000.

A condition of the arts council grant was to improve catering by building a commercial kitchen and using part of the snooker hall as a cafe.

Members of the economic and community regeneration scrutiny committee supported the proposal to start the tendering process for the contract to run it.

This was then passed by the cabinet board.

Head of partnerships and community development Russell Ward said: "We will be asking our in-house caterers to see if they are interested."

The five-year contract will involve a cafe and catering service but not the centre's licensed bar.
