AFTER a hectic walkabout at Swansea Market, Prince Charles had a more serene engagement at 5 Cwmdonkin Drive — the birthplace of Dylan Thomas.
And it was later announced that he would be patron of DT100, the year-long celebration in 2014 to commemorate the centenary of the poet and author of Under Milk Wood.
His Royal Highness was shown around the famous house by its custodian, Geoff Haden.
"We could not stop him talking!" said Mr Haden. "He overstayed his time by about 20 minutes.
"He engaged with everybody, and he knew Dylan's work. He spoke about his use of language, how descriptive it was and how he (Dylan) had been read Shakespeare by his father at the age of four.
"I suggested that he read Dylan's poetry to his unborn grandchild — he thought it was a great idea."
The prince also met, among others, Dylan's granddaughter Hannah Ellis, chairman of the Dylan Thomas Society, Jeff Townes, and Jean Lannigan, the daughter of the maid to the Dylan household, Emily Simpson.
Mr Haden and his wife Anne took over the house in 2005 and opened it on October 27, 2008.
The prince was served tea and Welsh cakes at the house yesterday. Mr Haden said His Royal Highness had found his earlier visit to the city's indoor market "hilarious".
