MICHAEL Laudrup has insisted he knows nothing about Barcelona despite speculation that he could be on the shortlist to take over at his former club. Barca coach Tito Vilanova stepped down yesterday after suffering a relapse in his battle with throat cancer. That grim news has prompted a wave of rumours about who might take over at the Camp Nou, and Laudrup is one of the men being mentioned in the Spanish media as a leading contender. The Swansea City boss is also among the favourites with the bookmakers despite insisting only last week that he will be staying at the Liberty this season. Also among the names said to be in the running are Tottenham's Andre Villas-Boas – though he has already played down the links – former Atletico Madrid coach Marcelo Bielsa and Newell's Old Boys boss Gerardo Martino. Ex-Barca players Frank de Boer and Luis Enrique have been mentioned, while caretaker boss Rubi is well-fancied despite suggestions that Barca will bring in a new coach from outside the club. When asked about talk that he could be a contender, Laudrup said: "I really can't comment on that. You are asking me something I know nothing about - it's pure speculation. "Even if everybody at the club has known about the situation of Tito Vilanova then it's still a big shock to everyone. "It was only a week or so ago that I read he said he was feeling strong, comfortable and 100 per cent ready for this season. "Now he's gone, I don't know what they are going to do. Let's see what happens." Laudrup expressed his sympathy for Villanova, who is just 44 years old. "It's very sad," Laudrup added. "I don't know much more than the announcement that he's left. I just hope he can be fit again because life is more important than football."
