TRADERS in Neath are being encouraged to support a campaign to save the town centre's Crown post office.
Post Office Ltd plan to close the Crown post office in Windsor Road, Neath, and seek a retail partner elsewhere in the town.
The announcement is part of Post Office Ltd's plans to close eight out of 20 Crown post offices in Wales.
A public meeting will be held on Monday at Neath Town Hall from 7pm to discuss the future of the post office. Speaking at a Neath Chamber of Trade meeting, town mayor Mark Fisher said they needed all the support they could get.
"I strongly believe that if we lose our Crown post office we will lose part of our community," he said. "What we are asking the community of Neath is to get behind our campaign."
Mr Fisher said the town council and Labour Party were fully behind the campaign, along with the Communication Workers Union.
Chamber member Keith Harding asked if there had been interest from retailers taking on the post office.
Mr Fisher said: "I believe there are potentially two partners who have come forward."
Mr Harding added: "I know how important it is."
