UPLANDS is to host a new, monthly outdoor market.

The local produce market will see roads closed to traffic around Gwydr Square, in the heart of the Uplands, where stalls will be laid out.

And organisers of the not-for-profit community market say they have seen huge interest from people across the city since announcing it on Facebook.

Organiser and urban designer Gordon Gibson said: "We wanted to bring a local produce market to Uplands for some time.

"Uplands has so much going for it: a mix of people from families, to older people and students, and strong culture with Dylan Thomas' birthplace, as well as being the heart of Swansea's thriving creative community.

"Since we announced it on Facebook and Twitter we've been overwhelmed by the response of people who want a stall and people who can't wait to visit Uplands."

The market has the backing of Swansea Council, and local councillors hope the market will provide a boost to footfall.

Councillor Neil Ronconi- Woollard said: "We've worked side by side with the organisers as we are committed to bringing a sense of community back to Uplands and Brynmill, whilst building on the success of our local economy.

"My hope is that the market will put a smile on the faces of everyone in Uplands whilst boosting the day time footfall for businesses across the whole of our ward."

The market, which will also feature live acoustic music, is due to take place on the last Saturday of each month, with the first one on July 27, from 9am to 1pm.

Mr Gibson added: "Stalls are being snapped up, but we still have a few left, so get in touch if you've got something to sell, it's going to be a really busy morning!"
