A 57-YEAR-OLD pedestrian has died following a road accident in Swansea. The woman was taken to hospital yesterday afternoon where she was pronounced dead. Next of kin have been informed and South Wales Police are now appealing for witnesses. A force spokesman said a white Nissan Cabstar pick-up, which was travelling in the direction of the city centre, was in collision with two parked vehicles and the pedestrian. The driver of the Nissan was taken to hospital suffering minor injuries. He has been helping police with inquiries. The incident happened at around 1.20pm yesterday. Police closed Swansea Road between its junctions with Heol Pentre Felen and junction 46 of the M4, Llangyfelach, for hours while accident investigators and recovery teams carried out their work. Police say they would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision. They also want to hear from anyone who offered help at the scene, or who saw the Nissan being driven prior to the accident. Llangyfelach councillor Gareth Sullivan said he was not aware of the full circumstances of what happened, but offered his sincere condolences to the family of the deceased. Llangyfelach resident, retired teacher and community activist David Rees added: "My deepest sympathy goes to the family at such a tragic occurrence. "It is absolutely shocking. This sort of thing is a great rarity in Llangyfelach." A member of staff at the nearby Plough and Harrow pub in Swansea Road, said: "All I know is that the road was closed down. We could see the police and the helicopter." A resident of Penpant housing estate, who was driving home from work yesterday afternoon, said there was gridlock, and that he had to walk the last section of his journey. Swansea Road links Llangyfelach Road to the M4. The area's roads are particularly busy in the mornings and afternoons due to the proximity of the DVLA and Morriston Hospital. Anyone with information should contact the serious collision unit on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
