A GORSEINON church is preparing to mark its 100th birthday with a special service this month.

The foundation stone for St Catherine's was laid on May 29, 1913 — and exactly 100 years-on, the church will be hosting a service featuring the Bishop of Swansea and Brecon, John Davis, along with the Bishop of St David's, Wyn Evans.

The birthday service gets under way at 7pm, and is part of a series of events marking the church's centenary which include an ecumenical songs of praise service and a strawberry tea in June, a July flower festival and a parish barbecue in August.

Last year, as a precursor to its 100th birthday, the church restored its rare pipe organ, with the congregation raising more than £80,000 to return the 19th Century instrument to its former glory.
