A-LEVEL students have seen the future of medicine during a visit to Swansea's Singleton Hospital.

Around 50 of them from across South West Wales learned how maths and science support healthcare, checking out how scientific techniques, engineering and technology are used to diagnose and treat patients.

A pineapple was scanned to demonstrate the high level of detail MRI imaging machines can show.

The careers' day was hosted by ABMU health board's medical physics and clinical engineering department.

Its director, Professor Huw Griffiths, said: "This was a very important event that will help to encourage the next generation of NHS scientists."

Dr Mark Bowtell, advanced healthcare scientist, said: "Physics and engineering are vital to the technology used every day to detect and treat life- threatening diseases, as well as enhance independence and quality of life."
