SWANSEA Market's iconic dome roof could be set to see an upgrade worth more than £1 million.

The money has been earmarked to refurbish the roof, which has exceeded its expected life-span by more than 20 years.

It is hoped the roof, which has suffered a number of leaks in recent years, will benefit from energy- efficiency measures including integrated solar panels and a rain water drainage system.

This proposed scheme will see the replacing of the roofing sheets to the iconic market dome, the treatment of all flat roof areas and the renewal of the roof lights.

The market roof will also be strengthened and the glazing will be replaced.

Swansea Council's cabinet will now be asked to approve the spending so a planning application for the work can be submitted in the future.

Nick Bradley, Swansea Council's cabinet member for regeneration, said the market was a major feature in the city.

He added: "Swansea Market is a vitally important feature of our city centre that helps strengthen our reputation for top-quality independent traders.

"It attracts visitors from far afield, and even the Prince of Wales was enormously impressed when he made a visit in December.

"The market helps Swansea city centre stand out from the crowd and that's why it's important we invest in its future during these enormously competitive times for traders."

Disruption

Mr Bradley said it was vitally important that disruption to the market hall from any ongoing work was minimised.

"Limiting the impact of the works and maintaining regular contact with market traders will be key to our planning as this proposal moves forward," he added.

Swansea Market, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2011, is the largest indoor market of its kind in Wales. If the cabinet approves the more than £1 million spend, it will give Swansea Council the opportunity to match-fund the scheme from other sources under the Waterfront City Convergence programme.

This could potentially lead to more improvements made to the market itself, such as more floor space, better signage and improved entrances.

The Waterfront City Convergence programme has provided more than £32 million of funding for Swansea city centre and for waterfront improvements

The funding has largely come from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) with match funding coming from the Welsh Government's Regeneration Area and Transport Plan programmes, the private sector and Swansea Council.
