A POLICE officer was knocked off his bike by a drink-driver who drove his moped at him.

Paul Bamsey, 27, was stopped by the officer who saw his moped was missing a rear registration plate, Swansea Crown Court heard.

Thinking it might be stolen, the officer pulled alongside him and grabbed hold of him by the collar of his clothes.

He told Bamsey to switch the engine off, but instead he revved the engine and rocked the moped back and forward.

As the officer called for help, Bamsey said to him: "**** me, I'm off."

He then started to accelerate, despite the officer holding onto him, and his wheel went into the officer's bike.

The bike then fell to the floor, taking the officer with him.

Frank Phillips, prosecuting, said Bamsey, of Incline Row, Taibach, had deliberately driven at the officer.

Injuries

He continued to swear at the officer, who was left with minor injuries to his shoulder and his knee.

He found to be over the limit with 52 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

After his arrest, he replied: "So ****ing what."

Bamsey had already recently appeared in court for drink-driving after officers became suspicious when they saw his car clip a kerb.

On that occasion he was found with 63 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35 micrograms.

At the time of the second offence he was subject to an interim driving ban. He was also the subject of a suspended sentence after being convicted of burglary.

Frances Jones, representing Bamsey, asked Judge Peter Heywood to suspend the sentence.

He said his client had now spent his first period in custody and had got his problems under control.

"For 18 months to two years, he was out of control," said Mr Jones.

"There were no convictions before 2010."

He said that previously his client had been employed and had a mortgage, but his house was now being repossessed.

"People can react differently to their period in custody. He has behaved responsibly," said Mr Jones.

"The prospects of him, on release, becoming a law-abiding and sensible citizen are very high," he added.

Bamsey admitted two counts of driving with excess alcohol, driving with no insurance, driving while disqualified, without proper registration plates and resisting a police officer.

He also admitted possessing diazepam and cannabis after they were found in his pocket at the police station.

The judge jailed him for a total of 12 months for the driving offences and the breach of the suspended sentence.
