LLANELLI could get a new Welsh language centre if funds can be won for the project.

Newly-established not-for-profit company C13 Cyf says the facility would be the first of its kind in Carmarthenshire.

The company has been set up to investigate and bid for funding for the development of the community venue.

"It is something which we feel will bring great benefits to Llanelli, especially in light of the National Eisteddfod once again visiting the town," said the company's voluntary development officer Owain Glenister.

Applications for funding have been submitted to the Welsh Government and Carmarthenshire Council.

Volunteers have earmarked the former Hope and Anchor pub in Cambrian Street as a potential home for the project.

Mr Glenister said: "We feel that it is a building with great potential in terms of being used as a live music community venue and as a general community facility."

He said the company hoped to have on-site simultaneous translation equipment which would be provided free of charge to groups hiring the venue for meetings.

"What we propose to deliver is a project which will create the maximum impact with regard to language development and a facility that can be used by the entire community," said Mr Glenister.

"We hope that some of the space can be used to accommodate young people looking to develop new business ideas."

But the company had no intention, now or in the future, to establish a hostel of any kind, he said.

"We are committed to raising awareness of the Welsh language and to showcase language, culture and heritage to both Welsh speakers and non-Welsh speakers alike," added Mr Glenister.

"We also hope to use the venue to put on a number of activities and services for people of all ages including children, young people, families and the elderly."

Lottery funding is also being sought for the project.

Glanymor councillor Winston Lemon said: "I have requested the town council to get the proposals put on the table, and as long as it is promoting the Welsh language and culture there is no problem."

C13 Cyf has been asked to present its ideas at a future town council meeting.
