FOUR people have been arrested in connection with kidnapping and assault in Port Talbot.

Two of the suspects were said to have been located in Briton Ferry, and were found with the help of information garnered during a separate operation in Sandfields and Aberavon.

Officers were involved in the latest Operation Pericles, which identifies and deals with issues directly affecting communities.

The latest exercise was in response to a rise in antisocial behaviour and burglaries.

It was led by Sergeant Andy Matthews, who described it as a success. "One person was summonsed for committing a public order offence," he said.

"Officers were also directly involved in locating and arresting four persons wanted in connection with the kidnap and assault of a local man.

"Information gathered by officers in the operation was crucial in apprehending two of the suspects in the Briton Ferry area of Neath."

No further information on the case was available.

Sergeant Matthews said: "Fortunately, officers on the ground in Sandfields were able to act swiftly to help other units identify, locate and arrest these wanted persons.

"It brought about a fast and successful conclusion to what could have been a drawn out and serious situation."

Operation Pericles saw officers set up a police surgery in Morrisons and visit residents who had been affected by burglary.

A leaflet drop was also carried out, warning residents about the risks of not securing their property.

Sergeant Matthews said: "We want to work with local residents to ensure their concerns are addressed and help them deal with issues like antisocial behaviour and burglary. These are problems that the police cannot resolve in isolation.

"But by working with residents and our local business partners and the local authority we can tackle them head-on.

"While the risk to residents of being a victim of burglary is extremely low in the Port Talbot area, one victim is one too many so we want to prevent our local residents being another burglary statistic."

Sergeant Matthews said antisocial behaviour was also an area police would continue to focus on.

"We are acutely aware of the impact this behaviour has on residents," he said.

"They do not deserve to be subjected to any form of abuse in their neighbourhoods by a minority of people.

"Our message is simple for those who behave in an anti- social manner — they will be dealt with swiftly and robustly."
