Wales rugby: I'd rather we had lost by 50 points, says Mike Phillips

MIKE Phillips reflected on another Australian late, late show and admitted: "I'd rather have lost by 50 points".

An hour or so after Kurtley Beale had dived over in the corner to condemn Wales to an autumn series whitewash, the Bayonne scrum-half admitted he was struggling to find words to express the disappointment.

"We are all pretty flat in that changing room," said the Lions No. 9. "It is difficult to take — I'd rather lose by 50 points than like that.

"I thought we played some outstanding rugby out there and despite all the injuries we have had during this series, the boys who came in have done well.

"But we have to take it on the chin.

"We have shown we have got players who can come in and do a job and I am sure we will see the benefits of this campaign for three or four campaigns to come."

The defeat has seen Wales drop into the third tier of nations ahead of today's 2015 World Cup draw in London, with Samoa and Argentina leapfrogging the Grand Slam champions in the IRB rankings.

Warren Gatland's men could potentially end up in a pool containing world champions New Zealand and hosts England, although Phillips insists the players aren't overly concerned.

"I don't think it's bothering anyone," he added.

"The World Cup is miles away; we'll just wait and see what the draw brings.

"As players we have to focus on going back and playing well for our regions and clubs and then focus on winning the next game for Wales when we get back together."
