A MAN has appeared in court charged with racially abusing a Norwich City player during a match against Swansea City.

Lee Ward, 23, of High Street, Glynneath, denied the charge during a brief hearing at Swansea Magistrates' Court.

He pleaded not guilty to a single charge of using threatening, abusive or insulting words and behaviour to cause harassment, alarm or distress towards Sebastian Bassong and that the offence was racially aggravated.

The offence is alleged to have occurred on December 8 at the Liberty Stadium during a match between Swansea and Norwich.

City magistrates accepted jurisdiction in the case but Ward elected for his case to be heard at crown court in front of a judge.

Ward was given conditional bail and the case was adjourned to be heard at Swansea Crown Court on March 28.
