A PORT Talbot mother has been sentenced to 21 months in prison for dealing drugs.

Jayne Jones, 46, appeared at Swansea Crown Court for sentencing after pleading guilty to five counts of possessing drugs at an earlier hearing.

Three of those charges were of possession with intent to supply.

The court heard that officers from South Wales Police had seen a car being driven by Jones at Burrows Road, Neath, at around 12.30am on February 23 last year.

The officers followed the vehicle and saw it had been abandoned by the driver.

Jones was caught a short time later carrying a brown bag, which was found to contain a quantity of amphetamine and mephedrone, six mobile phones and £140 in cash.

When she was searched police found two more bags of powder.

The second incident occurred in November when police called to her home in Villiers Court, Port Talbot, to help with an unrelated matter.

When the home was searched, officers found more drugs, 66.5 grams of mephedrone and 38.49 grams of amphetamine, valued at around £853.

The court also heard Jones had breached a suspended sentence handed to her in 2010 after being convicted of dangerous driving and perverting the course of justice.

In mitigation, defence barrister Patrick Griffiths said: "She is at pains to point out she is not someone who went out of her way to attract others not known to her.

"She incurred a large debt herself in using drugs and it accumulated. It became impossible for her to repay it in a conventional manner.

"It is clear she is not in the best of health and does have health issues."

Jailing Jones for 21 months, Recorder Gregory Treverton-Jones said: "You have a very bad record of 98 offences including 13 drug offences.

"The only sentence must be one of imprisonment."
