Super Swans cup surprise for brave little Lucy's family

THE family of an eight- year-old girl who died last year from cancer have been given a Swans surprise — thanks to a generous English football fan and the Evening Post. Southampton fan David Donworth contacted the Evening Post yesterday to see if we knew of any deserving families who would like to watch the club take on Bradford City in their first ever major cup final — for free! And we put him in touch with the Wiemers, from Llansamlet, who have taken Mr Donworth up on his kind offer. Mum Nicola and dad Andrew lost their daughter Lucy, who spent much of her life fighting systemic mastocytosis — a scarring of the bone marrow — and JMML leukaemia, in April 2012. Nicola said: "It is fabulous, we are happy to take the tickets. We are going to take our two eldest daughters, Rachel, 13, and Chloe, 12, they are really big fans. They will be so excited. "We have to get organised now, it is brilliant." Also going along for the day will be Bernice Wiemers-Rowden — Andrew's aunt and the Swans' very own "poet laureate". Lucy was diagnosed with her rare condition shortly before Christmas in 2009 and spent the following six months undergoing treatment until doctors ruled out a bone marrow transplant and her chemotherapy was stopped. Big-hearted David has been a member of Club Wembley, entitling him to tickets for all the big games, since it reopened in 2007. And he said he would rather see his tickets go to deserving fans than see them unused. He said: "I know what it's like, you don't get the chance to go to Wembley often. "Club Wembley do this thing where you can give your tickets to a charity but I have been busy and by the time I had noticed it was too late. "Rather than wasting them I wanted someone to use them. "I couldn't be any more happy, it is the day the family can remember. "I don't want anything for it, I just want to see them used. "One of my greatest memories was when my father took me to the 1976 FA Cup Final (Southampton beat Manchester United 1-0). "I took my own son to the recent Johnstone's Paint Trophy final, you just never forget them." ticket benefactor Nicola Wiemers and her daughters Chloe and Rachel Mason are off to Wembley and (left) Lucy Wiemers.
