Families and homeowners living close to land at Caer Gynydd Road in Waunarlwydd are campaigning for the area to be protected with village green status.
Around 70 people gathered at the site for a protest with the support of Geraint Davies MP and Cockett councillor Ann Cook.
Mr Davies received a petition more than a year ago with a large number of signatures from people who live in the Waunarlwydd area and are opposed to the possibility of the land being considered as possible building land.
The land has been used as a village green for more than 30 years and, according to campaigners, is the only green space in Waunarlwydd for children, adults, Waunarlwydd Primary School and the local Brownies pack to use for play and recreation.
Father-of-two Glen Young has lived in the area for 35 years and has played a key role in the campaign to secure village green status for the site.
The 46-year-old said: "This park is used by the community.
"It is used in the summer by kids playing football, rugby and golf and meets the criteria for village green status.
"My eldest son used to use the park and my daughter was in the Brownies and used to use the site as well.
"I want it to be protected for children using it in the future."
Under Swansea Council's Local Development Plan (LDP) the land is currently listed as undeveloped land proposed for residential use.
However, the LDP has not get been formally adopted and is still in the process of being formulated.
Mr Davies said: "I have written to the chief executive of Swansea Council about this, and sent the council a copy of the residents' petitions.
"It is really important that residents in the area have somewhere they can go and walk their dogs, play with their children and enjoy the outdoors.
"This land has been used for many years and it should be put aside as a village green, so that residents in the local area can use it for many more years to come."
Councillor Cook added: "We are here to support residents who feel strongly that this land should be set aside for the enjoyment of all."
