PLAID leader Leanne Wood has welcomed "historic" changes to the party's constitution.
The changes, agreed at a special conference held in Aberystwyth over the weekend, will see the role of president scrapped and will give all members — not just delegates at conference — the right to vote.
A leader's team will also be established which will aim to ensure clear leadership for the party.
Ms Wood said: "These are exciting changes that will strengthen the way we work as a party.
"Our aim is to become the party of government in 2016, and these changes will help us achieve that aim.
"The creation of a leadership team will ensure that there is greater accountability for the decisions we take as a party from our elected members at all levels, and will mean that there is clearer leadership.
"The leadership team will also incorporate the work of the president.
"The decision to overhaul this long-established post within the party is an historic one, and one which is indicative of our commitment to the renewal and re-evaluation of the way we operate."

She added: "I thank Jill Evans MEP for her hard work as president, and look forward to her contribution as a member of the leader's team."
The changes have emerged from the Camu 'Mlaen — Moving Forward, a review of the party led by Eurfyl ap Gwilym following its disappointing performance in the Assembly elections in 2011.
Following the elections, Plaid is now the third biggest party in Wales, behind Labour and the Conservatives.
Dr ap Gwilym said: "The changes agreed by the party are extremely important for achieving the goals set out by Camu 'Mlaen, and I am glad that they have won the support of our members.
"We are determined that Plaid Cymru becomes the natural political home of the people of Wales.
"Our values are in line with the natural leanings of the people of Wales, but in the past we have failed to capitalise on that."
Speaking after the conference, he said: "During the process of renewal we are changing the way we operate so that we are able to deliver the results we expect of ourselves, and today's special conference was an important step in achieving that aim."
