AN Amman Valley community has been called on to rally around the family of a former rugby player who died on Thursday.
The 25-year-old, named locally as Michael Richards, was pulled from the River Aman on Thursday morning.
A search and rescue operation was sparked at 3.45am on Valentine's Day, after the man was seen to enter the River Aman at a bridge near Brynaman RFC.
Dyfed-Powys Police, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue, Brecon Mountain Rescue and the helicopter from RAF Chivenor were all involved, with the body of Mr Richards found shortly before 8am near the Nant Gwyn Bridge further downstream.
Mr Richards, of Lower Brynaman, had played rugby for both Cwmllynfell and Brynaman. It is not known if he was still playing for Brynaman RFC.
Paying tribute, Lower Brynaman councillor Arwyn Woolcock said: "It's a very, very sad and distressing time for the family, and I would like to send my deepest sympathies to them.
"Neighbours and the whole village will rally behind them and support them at this time."
He added that floral tributes and a rugby shirt had been placed on the bridge on the day following his death.
Quarter Bach councillor Glynog Davies said his son previously played rugby with Mr Richards. Roydon Morgan, chairman of Cwmllynfell RFC, said Michael was an integral part of the team during his time there.
"He showed an ability to get up to the mark of what division one rugby was all about," he said.
"Of course, with most players who come to a club, their loyalty is to their home team, and Michael decided to go back to Brynaman.
"It is with great sadness that we heard about the terrible news, and send our condolences and our heartfelt feelings to the family."
