A NEATH man who assaulted a police officer after arguing with his wife has appeared in court.
Police were called to the home of John Shepherd at Dan-y- Graig Road, Cimla on June 9 after reports of a domestic argument.
Officers arrived and spoke to Shepherd and his wife, but noticed a knife in his cardigan pocket.
As they spoke to him, Shepherd, 45, began to shout "I'll end the officers" and "I'll do you over". Officers became concerned and tried to grab his arm but Shepherd began to resist and struggle with the officers.
During the struggle to handcuff him, Shepherd tried to bite PC Matthew Wesley, Swansea Crown Court heard.
The officers had to strike him three times to get him under control, prosecuting barrister Brian Simpson said.
Shepherd then became abusive and resisted being searched in the police van and he began butting the cell walls inside the van.
Knife
Shepherd had been due to stand trial for affray but admitted a lesser charge of common assault. Frank Phillips, representing Shepherd, said the knife had not been produced by his client who had stopped taking medication before the incident.
Judge Peter Heywood gave Shepherd a 12-month community order and 12 months supervision. He was also ordered to take part in a domestic abuse and controlling behaviour course.
